Kaplan-Shaw

My co-worker, Lou, is a musician and is in an acoustic blues band. I went to hear him for the first time this evening. He's REALLY good and his band is awesome. They played in this quaint little café that is only 5 miles from my house. Check out their website if you want to hear some samples of their performances. Lou Kaplan & Mike Shaw

Owls and other wildlife

I know some readers have little context when I share my little house on the prairie experiences. So I am going to try and give you some sound clips.

So first things first, the fox from the other night sounded like this.

When we lived in Union Springs we were always hearing coyotes. I suggest listening to howl 7, howl 10 and any of the howls in the 50's to get a good idea of what we'd hear. Although nothing is as creepy as hearing it live and just acrossed the hedgerow or street.

One winter night Andrew and I actually went hiking after a couple of Great Horned Owls to see if we could get a glimpse of them, they were pretty elusive but we did see them in the woods. That night it was pretty cool cause they were doing their calls back and forth to each other, there were two of them. We've also heard one when were were out running this spring. But the creepiest was one night I heard it do its hunting shriek right in our backyard. I've looked all over for this noise online, alot of people talk about it and how it will make your hair stand on end or prickles go up your spine, I haven't been able to find an example.

tonight going out to get the fly masks off the horses we heard a noise. At first I thought it was an Eastern Shriek Owl, but now I am thinking it might have been the Red Fox. We haven't heard it again since we've been in the house, the differences are too suttle to recall from memory.

Sorry these pictures are from the real estate posting so furniture and stuff is from previous owner.

Back hayfield of 6+/- acres, to the right of that is the 5 acre pasture and we own the woods on either side and at the back of the field, that would be another 5 acres. I love it :)

And there are no coyotes! I hate coyotes, I especially hate waking up to coyotes. But the neighbour told me there are foxes and I think I heard one the other night. Of course it was one of the nights Andrew was in Nashville, I thought I would be all brave and sleep with the windows open (ok I am paranoid when I am home alone). And then I heard the whimpering howl of a fox, very pitiful sounding. Still not something you want to hear when you are trying to fall asleep, but I kept the windows open.

Internet

I'm so excited I finally have internet at home, and it works. The company we are using sent us a defective modem/router thing the first time. So I have been trying to think of all the things I could post about from over the summer since I have been online so little. Hope to have a few neat things up within the next couple of days. Looking forward to faithful readers comments....you know who you are.
